DO DOGS GO TO HEAVEN?

 DO DOGS GO TO HEAVEN?

–         M.A. LaClair

Do dogs go to heaven?

We are told in Titus 3:9 to avoid stupid controversies (RSV) and to not get involved in arguing over unanswerable questions and controversial theological ideas (The Living Bible)

First let me say that I don’t think asking whether dogs go to heaven is a stupid question, nor do I believe it is unanswerable from Scripture. The writer of Ecclesiastes asked this question thousands of years ago. His pondering of old gives us clues for our positive answer today.

I’ve heard numerous people, and some denominations, say animals don’t have a spirit and therefore cannot go to heaven.  Let’s put that statement to rest once and for all.

Eccl 3:21 “Who knows whether the spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of the beast goes down to the earth?” RSV

This is saying that the beasts (animals) do indeed have a spirit.

Eccl 12:7 “Then shall dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”  NKJV

emphasis mine. This is not saying all will live in Heaven, but all will return for judgment

Chapter eleven and chapter sixty-five of the Prophet Isaiah each describe the new heaven and the new earth: he who dies at 100 will be considered a mere youth; the wolf and the lamb will feed together and the lion will eat straw like an ox. We don’t see that in this world, so it relates to the next.  Animals will be there who will neither harm nor destroy.

Revelation mentions riders on horses coming from heaven. There are horses in heaven and animals in the new world. To me, all this confirms that there are animals at peace in heaven. Don’t worry, there will be no threatening dogs, only peaceful ones, just as the lion will be.

In addition I pose two more theories:

First, there will be trees and rivers in Heaven, and many jewels form the foundations, and Heaven’s gates are made of pearls.  Do non living jewels have spirits or a soul?  Does water?  Yet, Scripture tells us these things are in Heaven. We will see further on in this article that Scripture also tells us trees will talk and sing.

Second, most animals are more in tune with the spirit world than a lot of men. In this life a dog can sense evil intent in man. A horse can sense the spirit of fear. Not all people like cats because they think some of them are spooky.

Do animals know God?   What about the serpent in the Garden? What about Balaam’s donkey who saw an angel?*  Today, some animals are more obedient through instinct than mankind is through intelligence!

About the future, Scripture says:

Isa 11:6   “…   the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. (NIV)

Yes, there will be animals at peace in heaven.

Our dogs and other pets who have been more loyal and obedient to the voice of the Lord in the here and now, and more loving to others in this world than possibly we ourselves have been, do have a place in the more perfect world to come. Scripture reveals it.

Third, the Scripture found in the Old Testament confirms itself in the New Testament.

Rom 8:18-22:

“For all creation is waiting patiently and hopefully for that future day when God will resurrect his children (those humans which have been saved by Grace). 20 For on that day thorns and thistles, sin, death, and decay –the things that overcame the world against its will at God’s command-will all disappear, 21 and the world around us will share in the glorious freedom from sin which God’s children ( humans saved by Grace) enjoy.  22 For we know that even the things of nature, like animals and plants, suffer in sickness and death as they await this great event.” TLB  (emphasis mine)

http://theproverbs120column.wordpress.com/2012/11/08/trees-talk-cry-and-they-sing/

With access to the Amplified Version one will find this statement reinforced as it regards the balance of creation.  These statements confirm that God has a special place for all His creation, moreover He makes humans the vanguard of all that He created.

“Study to show thyself approved, a workman who needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Tim. 2:15)  Do dogs go to heaven?  I believe the above study shows us that we will see in heaven those dogs who were faithful to us here on earth. If you are afraid of dogs here on earth, please be assured that only peaceful dogs will be there, for in Heaven, all are at peace!

I strongly recommend the book HEAVEN IS FOR REAL by Todd Burpo, now an international best seller, where a child who visited Heaven in a near death experience tells of his seeing Jesus and other things in Heaven.   One of the things was his Father’s Grandfather and his dog – etc….

Also *Dr. David Dosa, a geriatrician at the Steere House Nursing and Rehab Centre in Providence, Rhode Island publisOscar the...hed an article in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007 about OSCAR THE CAT.” He finally published the non-fiction book by the same name. It is about Oscar the cat who predicted which patients were going to die and when and did so with more accuracy than experienced nurses.  His article may be found on line. His book may be found or ordered most anywhere.

As an aside: The Old Testament tells us the trees cry (Zech 11:2); trees will clap their hands, the rivers and hills will rejoice (Is 55:12); Joshua’s rock was a witness because it heard (Josh 24:27) (Luke 19:40); See the authors article: SCIENCE PROVES THE BIBLE: TREES TALK, CRY AND THEY SING.

New Testament Scripture does tell us that:

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, the wonders HE has prepared for those who love Him! “ (1 Corinthians 2:9)

* Numbers 22:21-28 Balaam’s donkey speaks

P.S.   See additionally the recent post ANIMALS WILL BE JUDGED BY GOD for more assurance, that if you will be in heaven, you will see there with you, your faithful dog (cat) or your faithful horse (etc.)  One may also wish to see on this site: WILL MY HORSE BE IN HEAVEN? which incorporates much of the material herein but which also includes information special to horses.
May I direct you to my article which says it is alright to trap mice in mousetraps – scripture included – ‘we are to have dominion over animals’. This article includes an explanation given to my grand-daughters when they ‘caught me’ setting a mouse trap. It includes their reactions. It contains what many have called ‘delightful learning’.

P.P.S.  I’d like to refer readers to another site about dogs and animals in heaven – a lovely story in Guidepost’s Angels on Earth magazine on-line – it is a warm story, and the comments from their readers which follow their article are most interesting.

P.P.P.S.  I now recommend the author Gary Kurz and his book on animals and heaven.  I’ve just reviewed his  COLD NOSES AT THE PEARLY GATES. and would suggest it to you.     I’m sure this book may be found on Amazon. Happy continued reading.  / M.L.

So glad you found the references to animals you were looking for in the Torah: Here is a quote from the New Testament found in Revelation which mentions animals praising God in heaven which you may like:
Revelation 5:11-13 “And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; saying with a loud voice Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.”
Did anyone ever ask you about where animals go when they die? Let me go back and read what we just heard “And every creature which is in heaven”, sounds like an answer to me.

My dog Mooky (8 years old) has passed from defending our family from a deadly venomous snake here in Australia. An eastern brown snake ventured onto our property (2nd most deadly land snake in the world).

Mooky our dog is our hero he is always very loyal and protecting. We love him so much.

He killed the snake but he also gave his life as a sacrifice and saved our other female dog Sammy from being bitten.

Eastern browns are very territorial and are well known to borrow under concrete slabs to live for many years and often come out for food etc.

If the snake remained then we would have been at risk of being bitten ourselves.

Mooky will receive great reward at judgement day and I pray and hope to be reunited with him in heaven. He has also helped bring me closer to God in his passing.

I miss our hero so much.

      Dear Shane;
So proud yet so sorry for your family and for Mooky. Thank you for sharing your story. You say that you pray and hope to be reunited with him in heaven. I can guarantee that he will be there. It is also possible for you to be as sure of heaven as if you were already there. You see, Jesus did the same thing Mooky did – gave His life to save us from the power of the poison of sin and death.
Look on this site beneath ARCHIVES for CATEGORIES – ALL CREATION: – ARE WE ALL CHILDREN OF GOD and DIDN’T JESUS SAVE THE WHOLE WORLD to find out how you can be as sure of heaven as if you were already there.
Then look in your newspaper for a Bible believing church who has more than just Sunday services; Look for Sunday and mid-week service. There you should find people who love Jesus – and you should be convinced the Jesus is the answer, He is risen from the dead, He loves you and want to fellowship with YOU ! You will find peace for your soul and friends who will stick closer than a brother.
Th;ank you for sharing about Mooky ! God Bless and lead you along the right paths to heaven, where Mooky is playing in the fields!

After just watching my sweet little Saint pass over into “God’s Kingdom”, the last gift this sweet and precious Gift from God gave me was the comfort in knowing that there is something we do not know. In His last 2 agonizing hours of life on this earth trying not leave me, (he was in complete heart failure), I sang the hymn that I had sang to him all his Blessed life, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” which always calmed him in stressful situations. I kept quoting the 23rd psalm and he would quit breathing for as long as 5 minutes at a time and suddenly began breathing again on his own. He was in such horrible pain. He looked at me with eyes full of LOVE and the Vet claimed he would have brain damage due to lack of breathing if they were to save him. I knew from his look, that was NOT true. Finally, I could not watch him suffer anymore so I told him, “Go to the Light Sweet Boy, That Beautiful Light where the Saints are waiting to welcome you into Heaven. I repeated this again and on the second time, He took a breath like NO other and I KNEW it was his last. He went just like I told him and I truly know that was HIS FINAL Gift to me. He formed my relationship with God because I felt closer to God ever since his arrival in my despairing life. He was here to teach me and Teach Me He Did. It was only natural for this sweet Creature of God to give me such a Gift. I grieve horribly but I think of that last moment of those 2 hours and I KNOW beyond any doubt that it is THEY Who will certainly see God’s Kingdom. We can only HOPE after a lot of work that we have earned our right. God is so Great and works such Miracles if we only listen. God Bless.

Brad: thank you for your lovely heartfelt post. “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” has been MY favorite since I was ten years old; and is the song God used in one of my first prayer meetings to keep me coming back. That was 35 years ago.
Brad, we can do more than HOPE we’ve a right to Heaven, but we cannot EARN it; it is a FREE GIFT when we accept what Jesus did for us at the cross. We can be as sure of heaven as if we were already there. To know more, please visit my article: ARE WE ALL CHILDREN OF GOD at my other site: http://www.TheProverbs120Column.com The Scripture references at the end make it lengthy, but if you ask God to open your eyes and heart as you read, you should be able to gain assurance of Heaven and seeing your waiting faithful and true canine companions again in eternity.

Several years ago, my beloved Sasha passed away. She had started having seizures. Our vet put her on medication. At 7:30 in the morning and 7:30 at night she had her medicine. The medication helped for awhile but she had a big seizure and I knew it was time. People say it is your last act of love when you have them put to sleep. I grieved and still miss her so much. I prayed that God would give me a sign that she is O.K. The clock that I always used for the correct time for her medicine stopped exactly at 7:30. That gave me peace and I know we will be together again. Thanks for your article.

That the clock stopped at exactly 7:30 is an awesome thing! Thanks for sharing that with the readers…and me.
Some people don’t want to believe in anything they can’t see or touch. Yet one cannot see or touch many things that are real: color, fragrance, sound, love, etc…
Thanks for reading and replying; and thanks for reminding us that life continues in another dimension, and that dimension can influence the dimension in which we live. That’s what prayer is about – a supernatural dimension influencing the physical dimension. Jesus is alive and well, in another dimension in this world. And He can make Himself known and felt even when we can’t touch Him physically.

I too lost my beloved dog of 15 years to bone cancer in February. She would have been 16 in April. She was the baby I never had. I somehow just know that she is in Heaven. Leading up to her passing, I was uncertain and read everything I could find on the subject but as she passed I felt a calm and have since then that I KNOW she is with my Mom who passed 9 months before that. I can’t say that I exactly “feel” her presence like some say, but I somehow just “know” which I am VERY thankful to God for!

Sylvia: Thank you for your nice comment. Sorry to hear about your dog and companion. They certainly have a way of bonding with us unconditionally. I hope you found the follow-up piece: ANIMALS WILL BE JUDGED BY GOD – I’m sure you will find additional information there, which should also be a confort, especially if friends tend to challenge the idea that dogs will be in Heaven. There is also an article WILL MY HORSE BE IN HEAVEN. It contains some of the same info as the dog article, but it contains additional info specific to horses. You may find that one interesting also. To further encourage those who may want further evidence that good dogs go to heaven, may I suggest reading the book: HEAVEN IS FOR REAL by Todd Burpo, who relates stories told by his four year old son who visited heaven in a near death experience and came back to tell about it.
One will be surprised to read what and who this little boy saw in heaven….

A wonderful and inspiring article written on a very controversial subject. Funny how I found on another site the same scripture of Eccl 3:21 where it was said much differently to prove that only man will see heaven. Oh how man is good at twisting words. A dog would never twist the truth. I have one who tell on himself when he has done something he shouldn’t. Show me a man with such honesty.
